The Akropolis Reed Quintet, a GRAMMY® Award-winning ensemble, visited the Dyer Center for a roundtable discussion with students on the topic: “Build the Artistic Career and Business of Your Dreams.” The quintet’s stop at the Dyer Center offered a candid preview of the entrepreneurial spirit behind the internationally acclaimed group, who performed at the Williams Center for the Arts the following evening.
Composed of five reed players—oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon—the members are also seasoned entrepreneurs unbounded by traditional limits. The quintet shared their unconventional path to success, which began with the struggle to simply turn a profit. They walked students through their journey of evolving from a fledgling ensemble to forming an LLC, and ultimately to transitioning into a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2015. This strategic move allowed them to accept private donations and pursue grants, aligning their mission with community engagement and greater accessibility to contemporary music. Their story demonstrated true entrepreneurial, outside-the-box thinking and determination.
The discussion also focused on the critical role of marketing and branding in the arts. The ensemble emphasized how a clear, authentic brand can powerfully “shorten the gap between the customer’s perception and the creator’s perception,” ensuring their innovative music and mission connect directly with their audience.
The quintet’s message was a compelling one for students across all disciplines: the same drive, strategic thinking, and dedication required to master an art form can be applied to build a sustainable, successful, and impactful business around that passion.
